If Carlsberg did Politics

Picture
January is all about taxes, tax returns. HMRC's announcement that they will take returns over the phone but it has got them into trouble for some reason.

For those of you who know me I am not particularly biased one way or another politically, although running a business I suppose suggests I might be slightly more liberal than socialist. And let's face it everyone hates filling in their tax returns and has a certain amount of respect and / or fear for the tax man. (Who of us wouldn't like to avoid paying as much tax as we do if we thought we could a) get away with it and b) knew it wouldn't affect the public spending we actually rely quite a bit on?)

But what I do try to keep my eye on is what is going on fiscally or politically that may affect people, my business and of course me personally.

Being highly alert to tax topics at this time of year I came across this article "Experts deride government advice to submit tax returns via telephone"

.... I don't get the controversy? For once the HMRC is actually trying to be practical, but is being met with derision.

Your Money Sorted - Time sensitive Offer

A huge Thank you to Eileen from Change Financial Coaching who gave us some really thought provoking material Thursday night. We found out a little bit more about Eileen herself and her coaching process, not to mention her passion for her subject.

And it was interesting how emotive the subject of money is. Money is tied very closely to our emotions whether positive or negative and we can take a financial journey without considering how we really feel.

Eileen took us through some basic steps on how to identify our feelings about money and started to explore what our financial goals might be. We had an interesting discussion also on what it means to be 'rich'... which means many different things and not always associated with money. In fact the group I think unanimously decided that having money and being rich was two entirely different things. It was a lovely and lively discussion.

EMyth Revisted

E-Myth \ 'e-,'mith\ n 1: the entrepreneurial myth: the myth that most people who start small businesses are entrepreneurs 2: the fatal assumption that an individual who understands the technical work of a business can successfully run a business that does that technical work
From the moment I started this book I couldn't put it down and it immediately became one of my 'reference forever' books. Michael Gerber, the author, takes you through a pie shop owner's journey of feeling burnt-out, running around doing everything herself despite having staff to opening a small chain of shops. Along the way Michael dots the story with other case studies, from which you can pick up lessons with every single one.

Although dealing with the operational side of running a business this is written as story rather than a reference book, so it keeps you interested all the way through. It engaged me so much I was delighted to find that E-myth had a coaching programme, and as of March 2016 I will be able to personally help other businesses find that a-ha moment when goals and stratagies become clear and teh real journey begins.
You can read the first chapter here...
